Letters, numbers, shapes and words
Alphabet pages usually pair the letter with an object that starts with it. Number pages pair the digit with that many things to count. There are also shape pages, tracing sheets, simple addition worksheets and sight word pages.
Slower than a flashcard, and better for it
The value of colouring a letter is time. A flashcard is over in a second; a letter that takes four minutes to fill in gets looked at properly. For a child who is not retaining letter shapes, this is often what shifts it.
